  • Portaits: 1/125 of a second
  • Action shots: 1/400 of a second
  • Long exposure waterfall: 15s
  • Blurred traffic car lights: 4s
  • To shoot action images, where you want to freeze movement, more light is needed.
  • To shoot images on a longer shutter speed, you’ll want a darker setting like night time.
  • The quicker your shutter speed, ex. 1/800, less light is let in.
  • The slower your shutter speed, ex. 30, more light is let in.
  • In a consistent lighting enviornment, if you change the shutter, you’ll need to compensate by changing either the Aperture or ISO.

  • Outside of using shutter speed to blur or sharpen an image, it can be used to control the brightness of a photo.
  • Quick shutter speeds: 1/100 and lower
  • Slow shutter speeds: 1s and higher.
  • It is suggested that as a beginner, when you want to adjust your shutter, you shoot in Shutter Priority, so that while you change yourshutter, your camera will automatically select your shutter.
  • Astrophotography: 10-25 seconds.
  • Flash photography: 1/200s.
  • Macro Photography: 1/320s
